I find myself in sort of a similar situation. I was hurt by organized religion and left people who called themselves Christians. The debate was never about the existence of God but the fact that people who go under the label Christian are often the meanest people I have ever known. I don't believe in the bible as a historical document anymore nor the God described in it.

In fact, as a transgender person and supporter of LGBT people in general. I cannot be part of the religion as it is today. Whether there is a God or Jesus is not my concern and I have faith that I will find my answers to everything someday. Every day is a day to learn new things rather than read the same old ancient books that are often no longer relevant to our lives today. But the Golden Rule is still my ultimate guiding principle and Jesus is only one who mentioned it. I believe it is a universal moral truth which we can all come to know and follow.
